Old
Mission Peninsula
Historical Society

Founded
in 1992
by a core group of citizens concerned about saving the Hessler Log
House, the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society continues to work
toward fulfilling its mission of preserving historical structures
and keeping alive the history of the region. We recently joined
Peninsula Township in the successful effort to raise the money
necessary to purchase, and thus preserve, the Peter Dougherty
Homestead, along with the fifteen acres it sits on. Doughety
founded the mission that gives our peninsula here in northwest lower
Michigan its name. When the house is fully renovated, we will
develop and administer the programs that will be open to the
public. With the Hessler Log House, the Dougherty Homestead will
serve as visible reminders of the rich history of this area.

newsletters, and other material, and consider joining us.
We meet the first Thursday of every month in the old Town Hall, 13235
Center Road. Each meeting features a presentation on some topic
of local history. At our next meeting, on May 4th, Elk Rapids
Historical Society VP Greg Reisiz and President Glenn Neumann will
talk on "Old Mission Peninsula and the Elk Rapids Connection."
