V. Old Business:
A. Nominating Committee: Laura Johnson reports that Jerry Ostlund has agreed to run for Vice President and Warren Berthelsen has agreed to continue as Treasurer. If anyone else is interested in running for a position please contact Laura or Barb Berthelsen.
B. Program Committee: Paul Burns reports that we are still in need of a volunteer to be chairman of the Program Committee. Jackie has several contacts for next year so you would already have a good start. If anyone is interested please call Paul Burns.
C. Hessler Log Cabin “Duties and Responsibilities”: An updated copy of the “Duties and Responsibilities for the Hessler Log Cabin” was passed out to the members for their review. A long discussion followed and it was decided to accept the new document with the exception of section V part A. (Section V part A will be changed to include 75% for repairs and maintenance and other expenses of the Log Cabin and 25% to OMPHS General Fund.) One concern was that we could accumulate an excess of money in repairs/maintenance. A copy of this document will be posted to our web site for additional review by the membership. Tentatively, the Historical Society will be responsible for the initial opening and closing of the log cabin at the beginning and end of the season. We will also open and close on Log Cabin Day. The new Grounds Maintenance employee will open/close on a daily basis at all other times until someone moves into the Lighthouse. We still need a volunteer to replace Patti Rudolph as Log Cabin Chairman. We will also need a sign-up sheet for volunteers to help with the initial opening (first week in May) cleaning once a week and the final season closing.
D. Grant Funding (OMWC): Paul reports that we did send an application to
Old Mission Women’s Club to be considered for a grant of $1,000. However, the OMWC is considering about 38 different worthwhile organizations and are only awarding a total of 6 grants. This means that we may not be among the finalists.
VI. Committee Reports:
A. Dougherty Home Site – Bob Dean/Marty Klein: Bob reports that the
Museum in Omena has a lot of information about Reverend Dougherty.
The Reverend actually spent more time in Omena than in Old Mission. Marty reports that the meeting with Nancy Finegood of the Historical Preservation Network went very well. Nancy must approve anything that is done to the outside of the house and grounds. The target date for the outside of the house will be around 1880 to 1900. That means the round porch will stay. The carriage house has some issues. We need to stabilize it (keep animals and rain out). Two trees on the property need to be removed. The dead tree in the front and the maple tree that is too close to the carriage house. We also need to stabilize the outhouse, which is in very bad condition. A temporary sign will be erected pending the official state of Michigan Historical Marker. We have a tentative approval to proceed with the reconstruction of the icehouse. Master stone mason Tim Wicksall has agreed to supervise the restoration of the foundation. We will need volunteers to work along with him.
The Peter Dougherty Society will host a nationally known expert on Historical Structures in conjunction with the beginning of a historical structures investigation. Ilene Tyler, FAIA, of Quinn Evans Architects in Ann Arbor will discuss the importance and role of a historic structure report in restoring the Dougherty-Rushmore house in Old Mission. The program will be presented at 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 11th, at the Township Hall. The public is welcome to attend and refreshments will be served.
B. Log Cabin Days- Heatherlyn Reamer: Log Cabin Day will be Sunday,
June 29th from 11:00 to 5:00. We will have crafters, music, and the Harmonica Class will be back. We will also have food again this year.
Sign up sheets for working in the Log Cabin and the Lighthouse are on the back table. You may contact Heatherlyn at 223-9256 or email to foxhill@pentel.net.
C. Newsletter/Website – Steve Lewis: Steve reports that he is looking for
ideas for the website. He currently downloads the Minutes and Agenda every month and a membership form is available on the site. If you have any ideas please give Steve a call.
VII. New Business:
A. Marty Klein suggested that perhaps the Historical Society should send a letter to the Township Board in support of the plans for the Lighthouse.
B. Penny Rosi reported that the next meeting for the Old Mission Master Plan would be held on March 12th, 7:00 p.m., at the American Legion Hall in Old Mission. Everyone is welcome.
